Ryan FleacrestWelcome to the inaugural Tuesday Tunes! I’m your host, Ryan Fleacrest (best known for hosting ENTO40 and American Emerald), and I’ll be bringing you some of the music industries odes to Odes (and other insects of course), each and every Tuesday! Neatly placed into your blogweek (between favourites such as Sunday Night Movie, Monday Night Mystery and the dual powers of Friday Beetle Blogging and Friday Flower), Tuesday Tunes will showcase a wide array of musical talents and genres, all with an entomological theme, either in the song title or lyrics, album name, or artist! The request lines are wide open, so if you have a favourite song, feel free to pass it along in the comments!

The honoured spot of first Tuesday Tune goes to the Presidents of the United States of America with their lesser known single Ladybug. P.U.S.A. hit the top of the charts in the ’90s with hits like Peaches and Lump, but their geeky style and alternative rock sound have a solid place in my heart!

Join me next week when we continue collecting these entomological treasures! Fleacrest, Out!

Today’s song is available from iTunes – Ladybug – These Are the Good Times People

One of my daily internet stops is TeeFury, a t-shirt site which offers independent designers the chance to showcase their work for one day only, and offers shirts for $9US! Usually there’s some pretty catchy shirts, but today’s is one of their better designs!

I’ve already ordered mine, so get yours while you can! The shirt will be off the market forever at 11:59:59PM Wednesday night, so act fast. Click here to order yours today.

I have no affiliation with TeeFury.com, just a big fan of t-shirts!

I’m an information addict, and blogs help feed my habit daily. I read about photography, web design, baseball, nature, video games, science, travel, and of course entomology, and each blog opens my eyes and educates me in a different way. But what if each blog took one day to discuss the same subject, from their unique point of view? That’s the idea behind Blog Action Day, an annual event geared at creating a unified conversation across the international blogosphere about a topic important to everyone. This year’s conversation begins Friday, October 15th, and will focus on water, something every living thing on Earth requires, yet which is largely taken for granted in the Western world. To date, 1,600+ blogs in 100 countries and with a combined readership of nearly 13,000,000 people have committed to dive into the discussion, and I’m sure those numbers will continue to grow this week.

I haven’t solidified what I’ll bring to the table yet, but I will do my part to get the world talking about water in my own, insect-centric way. I hope you’ll join meĀ  next Friday, and I encourage you to join in the discussion, either through your comments or through your own blog.

Recently I had the chance to watch the Charles Darwin biopic Creation, starring Paul Bettany (A Knight’s Tale, The Da Vinci Code) and Jennifer Connelly (A Beautiful Mind, Requiem for a Dream). Based on a retrospective biography by Darwin’s own great-great-grandson Randal Keynes OBE (Annie’s Box), Creation follows the life and times of Darwin and his family as he struggles with his world-altering theory.

Well, it’s time for the world’s greatest sporting event to begin, and this year it’s Canada’s time to shine! I figured that this year I’d show my support and patriotism through some creative insect editing! Stay tuned throughout the course of the Olympic games to find some of the smallest competitors! But first, a shout out to the fans who stand behind the athletes and cheer them on!

Good luck to all the athletes competing this year, and lets hope that the remainder of the games will be safe for all the competitors after today’s tragic accident.

I offer my sincerest condolences to Nodar Kumaritashvili’s family, friends, and teammates.

The godfather of entomology, E.O. Wilson, has published a fantastic story in the New Yorker Magazine detailing the life and death of an ant colony. My favourite line:

When defending the nest, the elders were among the most suicidally aggressive. They were obedient to a simple truth that separates our two species: humans send their young men to war; ants send their old ladies.
